Start with the median, not the average

Half of the 8,145 bathroom remodeling companies on Google have 10 reviews or fewer. That is the first number to sit with. A company doing six projects a month for five years has finished more than 350 bathrooms, and most of them never turned into a review. The mean of 48.5 tells a different story only because 1.7% of listings have passed 500 reviews, and those are franchise locations and multi-crew operations that ask every customer, every time.

The percentiles are the useful map. The 25th is 2. The 75th is 33. The 90th is 93. If you want to be in the map pack for "bathroom remodel" in a real metro, the top 10% is the neighborhood you need to live in, and in this trade that starts at 93 reviews. That is a reachable number. It is roughly a year of asking every finished customer and getting half to say yes.

16.3% of listings have no reviews at all. 69.4% have fewer than 25. A company with 30 recent reviews is ahead of two thirds of the trade.

Ratings do not separate anyone

The mean rating is 4.7. 86.7% of rated companies sit at 4.5 or above and 56.4% are at a perfect 5.0. Only 6.3% are under 4 stars. Homeowners cannot tell a 4.8 from a 4.9, and Google does not reward the difference much either. What they can tell is 7 reviews from 70, and whether the most recent one was last month or in 2022.

14.4% of listings are unrated, which in this category almost always means a listing someone created and forgot. Those are not competitors. They are noise in the search results that a complete profile beats automatically.

So the practical reading: protect the rating by fixing problems before the final walkthrough, but spend the effort on volume and recency.

The website gap is the biggest number in the report

20.4% of bathroom remodeling companies list no website on their profile. That alone is notable for a trade selling five-figure projects. The sharper number is what happens to reviews. Companies with a website have a median of 15 reviews. Companies without one have a median of 1.

A website does not cause reviews. The gap shows which companies are run as a business that asks for things and which are a phone number and a truck. The homeowner comparing you with a one-day bath franchise sees both numbers in the same scroll.

94.6% of listings have at least one photo, so having photos is table stakes. Having a photo of your own finished tile shower instead of a stock image is where it starts to matter. 25.5% publish an email address; adult children arranging a walk-in shower for a parent often prefer email, and most of the trade makes them call.

Hours tell a story about follow-up

40.8% of companies list no hours at all. A profile with no hours shows "Hours unknown" to a homeowner on a Saturday morning, which is exactly when a lot of remodel research happens. 36.1% list Saturday hours and 17% list Sunday. 5.8% claim to be open 24 hours, which for a bathroom remodeler mostly means a call center or an answering service.

You do not have to work weekends. You do have to list the hours you will actually pick up, and have a text-back for the rest, because a Saturday estimate request that waits until Monday has usually been answered by someone else.

What to do with this

  1. Find your own numbers. Count your reviews, note the date of the newest one, and place yourself against the 25th, 50th, 75th and 90th percentiles above. Write the gap to 93 on a whiteboard.
  2. Ask at the final walkthrough, every project. The customer is standing in the finished shower. Have the review link ready as a text. The reviews guide has the words.
  3. Fix the profile in an hour. Real hours, Saturday if you answer on Saturday, a public email, ten photos of your own work labeled by project type, and the "Bathroom remodeler" primary category with services listed. The profile guide walks through it.
  4. If you are in the 20.4% with no site, get one with a tub-to-shower page, a walk-in shower page, a pricing range, and tap-to-call. The website guide lists what it must do.
  5. Put a missed-call text-back on the business line before you spend a dollar on ads. Run the calculator with your real average ticket first.
  6. Check the report again next month. The dataset refreshes and so do your competitors.

Method

This report aggregates 8,145 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for bathroom remodeling companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
